Leader and Manager’s Roles in Evidence-Based Practice

A nurse leader and manager have to rely on evidence-based practices in inpatient care because EBP is a key component in the healthcare setting to improve patient outcomes. Also, it creates a positive environment, increases patient satisfaction, and ensures quality care. Besides, nurse leaders and managers perform continuous evaluation of nurses’ implementation of evidence-based practices during patient care. “Both managers and nurses need to have the necessary academic preparation, support, and resources required for practicing using an evidence base.” Nurse managers should influence the implementation of evidence-based practices by assessing the culture, environment, and supportive evidence in the care of patients. EBP has a role in creating skill-based practices and providing effective communication between nurses and clients from different cultures. In most cases, lack of professional skills or not following evidence-based practices leads to miscommunications which creates misdiagnosis, or inappropriate treatments.

EBP plays a key role in leadership by creating awareness for managers on areas that need improvements, the cooperative intervention also areas that need performance evaluation in healthcare sector. In addition, EBP supports ongoing nurses’ education to develop their skills and practices that help them to gain the knowledge to access the clinical database and other skill-based procedures, so managers should support and create the platform to have nurses this opportunity. In the clinical setting, managers take the main responsibility in the implementation of EPB, new practices, and activities also, look out for the hurdle that interferes with EBP. They should also evaluate the effectiveness of their practice implementation by analyzing and observing nurses’ performance and patients’ positive outcomes. Furthermore, managers should allow leaders and nurses to communicate with each other about evidence-based practices to construct experience and new knowledge sharing.

In the nursing field, evidence-based practice means combining the right clinical expertise and available evidence with the needs or requirements of patients when providing health care. Evidence-based practice is an essential part of nursing care because it helps nurses make better and more well-thought-out decisions, improving overall health care quality and patient satisfaction. Being a nurse manager or leader puts someone in charge of and leads a group of nurses as they go through their practice.

One of the primary jobs of a nurse manager is to make sure that all the nurses at the workplace know and can use EBP in bedside care effectively. During patient care, nurse managers are supposed to promote the use of EBPs. They also must ensure that the nursing practice stays up to date and relevant (Weiss, 2019). Nurses need to be taught and made sure they know how to evaluate, find, and use research studies in their work to keep EBP alive and well. By encouraging medical professionals and nurses to work together, you can help spread the word about EBP.

There is much evidence that collaboration between nurses is an excellent way to make evidence-based nursing work in the real world. Health care settings need collaboration because it improves patient outcomes, like lowering death and morbidity rates and preventing drug reactions that could have been controlled, which are both suitable for patients. Physical resources, like research materials, are needed to adopt and use EBP in the real world. Training and education resources, as well as resources for technological progress, should be actively used. A unique way to help nurses use EBP successfully is for the nursing manager to show them how it should be done.
